What Body Mechanics Actually Is

Body mechanics is the use of the body in the most efficient, least stressful way to perform physical tasks. It involves:

  • Base of support: The area beneath your body defined by the points of contact with the ground. A wider base = greater stability. Feet shoulder-width apart or wider creates a stable base for any physical task.
  • Center of gravity: The point through which the body's weight is balanced. Keeping your center of gravity low (bending knees, not waist) and within your base of support prevents loss of balance.
  • Alignment: Keeping the spine in its natural curves — not twisted, bent forward at the waist, or compressed — distributes load evenly and prevents injury.
  • Lever principles: The closer a load is to your body, the less force your muscles must generate. Holding a client close to your body during a transfer is physics, not just technique.

4. Has the client been told what will happen? (narrate every step)
